These two year olds were grown in a very soft sandy soil mix (70% sand - 30% topsoil)
This grow bed was experimental and did not work out very well compared to the beds that contained more humus in the topsoil. However, the soft soil mix allowed me to remove the plant and root ball with very little damage to the root system. Thought you might like to see it.
The trick to placing or transplanting these plants into or around your garden is to prepare the location first. 2-4 year olds should get a spot about 18 inches in diameter and about a foot deep. Soften up the soil with peat or potting mix (+/- 30%) and water them daily for the first couple of week. This plant loves water and filtered shade.
Remember, Hellebores are very slow growing but they will last for a thousand years. Keep them watered and be patient.
